Company Description
The Cincinnati Pops, which also performs as the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, is under the direction of John Morris Russell and presents a diverse array of musical styles, encompassing the world-renowned “Cincinnati Sound.” The Pops was officially founded in 1977 by Erich Kunzel, and since 1980, the Pops has sold ten million recordings worldwide.
The Pops has performed in recent years with contemporary artists such as Rhiannon Giddens, Ben Folds, Idina Menzel, Boyz II Men, Kristin Chenoweth, Vanessa Williams, Audra McDonald, Ben Folds, Roseanne Cash, Bernadette Peters, and Smokey Robinson. These collaborations continue a tradition of working with legends including Aretha Franklin, John Williams, The Temptations, Ella Fitzgerald, Peter Frampton, Dave Brubeck, Mel Tormé, Henry Mancini, Rosemary Clooney, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Arturo Sandoval.
The Pops tours nationally and internationally, most recently in Shanghai and Taiwan for concerts in March 2017 and Florida for a week of performances in December 2014. The Pops traveled to Beijing as part of the Opening Festivities of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, and in 2005, the Pops completed a historic tour to China and Singapore performing in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The Cincinnati Pops was the first U.S. Pops orchestra to perform in China. They have also performed to enthusiastic audiences in Carnegie Hall, Washington D.C., and multiple tours in Japan.
An estimated 30 million people have viewed national telecasts of the Cincinnati Pops on PBS, and the Orchestra has more than 100 available recordings, 55 of which have appeared on the Billboard charts, a record unmatched by any other orchestra. The Pops’ Copland: Music of America won a Grammy in 1997, and four other Pops recordings have been nominated for Grammy Awards.
In 2012, the Pops released its first recording under John Morris Russell, Home for the Holidays, on the Orchestra’s own Fanfare Cincinnati label. Subsequent recordings Superheroes! and Carnival of the Animals reached #8 and #15, respectively, on the Billboard charts. The most recent Pops release, American Originals: 1918, celebrates and reimagines American music of the post-World War I era, and is a successor to the Pops’ 2015 release of American Originals, which received national attention for its reimagining of the Stephen Foster songbook. In the spring of 2016, the Pops unveiled American Soundscapes, an online video series that features Pops performances captured live. It has already reached nearly a million viewers around the world.
Position Summary:
The Director of Artistic Planning, Pops, is responsible for managing all aspects of artistic planning and programming for the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, collaborating with the Pops Conductor, President and Vice President & General Manager. The Director is a key collaborator in the ongoing stewardship and development of the CPO’s artistic profile nationally and internationally, especially in developing recording projects, tour programs and media events, and is responsible for initiating, developing and maintaining the Pops' relationships with major artists, arrangers and conductors. The Director may also be responsible for managing programming of other presentations of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, as assigned.
Job Responsibilities:
Artistic Profile of the Cincinnati Pops
- In collaboration with the Pops Conductor, President and General Manager, formulates the CPO’s long-range artistic profile with the goal of presenting innovative orchestral programming featuring groundbreaking concepts and artistic partnerships.
- Identifies, attracts and works with major guest artists and key conductors to foster long-term relationships with the Orchestra, including artist residencies.
- Responsible for commissioning new arrangements, including fostering relationships with and identifying major arrangers.
Planning
- Consult on the long-range schedule for the CPO with the General Manager, Director of Operations and Senior Management Team.
- Plan CPO programming with Pops Conductor and guest conductors, along with involvement of Vice President of Marketing, General Manager and President, that advances a goal to develop and inspire a new audience for the 21st century.
- Engage and contract all guest artists and conductors.
- In consultation with Pops Conductor, identify and engage special performance groups such as choruses, dancers, bands, etc., including the hiring of directors and other creative personnel needed for staged productions.
- Identify important new and/or young artists and arrangers.
- Plan Lollipops programs, with Pops Conductor and guest conductors, along with involvement of Vice President of Marketing, General Manager and Director of Education & Community Engagement, as needed.
Management
- Communicate internally the programming for all Pops programs, both locally and on tour, in a timely manner to maximize marketing and promotional opportunities.
- Recognize and respond to evolving industry trends and help the Pops Conductor and senior management team to create popular orchestral entertainment at the forefront of the industry.
- Along with General Manager and Director of Education & Community Engagement, plays a leading role in managing and planning collaborations with other institutions, and integrating these activities with the Pops' overall artistic profile.
- Facilitate guest performer contract servicing, including rider mark-ups and distribution.
- Participates with the General Manager, Director of Operations and Director of Orchestra Personnel in development of detailed season schedules.
Other Responsibilities
- Develop new commercial opportunities, i.e. packaged shows, recordings for hire, music rentals, publishing, etc.
- With Education & Community Engagement and Marketing, identify opportunities for Pops Conductor and Pops brand to become more visible in the community and globally.
- General responsibility, in collaboration with the General Manager, Marketing, Communications and Education & Community Engagement teams, as appropriate, for ensuring the artistic integrity of audience engagement initiatives, including pre-concert activities, original video productions, concert image magnification, surtitles, and other activities.
- Attend Pops performances to assess quality of concert presentation in order to provide timely and impactful feedback to Pops Conductor and Production staff, and to inform future artistic planning.
- Serve as a staff representative, supplementing the efforts/appearances of the Pops Conductor in his/her absence, for the organization at donor/community functions such as fundraising receptions and subscriber events; contributes written materials and participates in public speaking engagements, as required.
- Assist in surfacing and addressing all music licensing issues affecting the Pops, serving as a leader in the field and participating on national task forces, as appropriate.

Reporting Relationship: The Director of Artistic Planning, Pops reports to the Vice President & General Manager.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in related area required.
- 3-5 years of experience in arts management/programming, including budgeting, negotiation, engagement management/booking and marketing.
- Proficient in Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and detailed writing skills.
- Understanding of contracts; some facility in preparation of contracts.
- Comfortable working in an open-office environment.
- Nights and weekend work required.
- Travel required, both with the Pops and individually.

Position Summary: The Accounting Manager will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the accounting office, including responsibility over accounting, general ledger reconciliation, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll entry. Under general supervision, the Accounting Manager will perform a variety of detailed accounting duties in accordance with accounting procedures and checks and verifies data for completeness and accuracy. The Accounting Manager will work closely with the Director of Finance to ensure that CSO and subsidiary/partner organizations have the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Finance and Accounting Leadership
- Provides overall accounting for the CSO, subsidiary, and partner organizations
- Completes accounting functions in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures
- Assist with event setup, payment processing, settlement, reconciliation and reporting
- Review, code and enter vendor invoices into the accounting software
- Prepares vendor checks, ACH’s and wires and files supporting documentation
- Reviews daily cash receipts for accuracy and prepares invoices as needed
- Assist with event reporting, forecasting and budgeting and special reports, as needed
- Reconcile payroll to the general ledger on a regular basis including allocation of all wages and taxes appropriate to each event
- Reconcile payroll deduction and employee benefit amounts and prepare payment submission documentation
- Participates in monthly general ledger reconciling and closing
- Analyzes general ledger activity and proposes adjustments, as needed
- Completes special projects and miscellaneous assignments
- Maintains credit card accounts, including reconciling credit card statement(s)

Position Opportunity:
The Cincinnati May Festival and the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Cincinnati (MF/VAE) are two of the Greater Cincinnati area’s premiere choral organizations. While the organizations are two separate 501(c)3 organizations with separate boards, budgets and artistic leadership models, the two organizations have a shared-services agreement with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra to provide administrative leadership to both organizations.
The MF/VAE is seeking a passionate, enthusiastic, and forward-‐thinking professional for its Director of Advancement & Engagement. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Advancement & Engagement will work closely with staff colleagues and the Boards of Directors to achieve and exceed contributed revenue goals. Responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive advancement plans, which will include and are not limited to key fundraising programs, planned and annual gifts, and corporate and foundation relations. The director will provide leadership and day-‐ to-‐day management for development-‐related programs, and must be comfortable and effective at building strong relationships with the organizations’ volunteer leadership and donor base.
SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Portfolio Management – 60%
- Responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of current and future individual supporters, corporate/foundation donors, and other funding partners, including the annual ArtsWave and Ohio Arts Council application submissions; lead efforts to develop a pool of broad-‐based givers and major gift prospects through personal interaction opportunities
- Provide vision and direction to build a strategic benefits program, and actively engage givers and prospects through unique opportunities that connect passion with our missions
- Work collaboratively with and in support of board committees, board members, and other staff to identify, cultivate, and solicit renewed and/or increased gifts; steward prospective members to meet annual fund campaign goals
- Maintain a portfolio of donors and prospects at various stages of development in the gift cycle
- Work to enhance the planned giving program, including prospecting, events and recognition
- Coordinate and strategize key meetings between the Executive Director, artistic leadership, Board member(s), and major donor prospects
- Develop, prepare, and present formal fundraising proposals to major foundation (private and public) and corporate sources
- Write annual fund campaign letters to fulfill overall individual giving strategy
- Identify prospective foundation and corporate grant opportunities for organizations, both locally and nationally
Special Events – 10%
- Plan and execute advancement-related events, working with the Executive Director and volunteers in establishing and achieving event goals.
- Ensure preparation and timely distribution of all event-related securing sponsorships, patron packages, and in-‐kind support
Management Responsibilities – 30%
- Provide leadership and direction to ensure success of all aspects of fundraising goals and special events
- In collaboration with the Directors of Marketing and Communications, ensure all fundraising communications are met and within brand standards
- Collaborate with Data Services Department to ensure donor correspondence and proper tracking is fulfilled including, but not limited to: pledge letters, acknowledgment letters, invoices, and gift agreements
- Research current local and national philanthropic trends
- Act as a strategic partner for the Marketing and Communications departments, actively working with those teams to increase interdepartmental communications to deliver a core coordinated/unified message to effectively increase engagement of patrons

Experience and Characteristics Required:
The ideal candidate is an experienced fundraiser with the ability to work collaboratively with staff, board of directors and other high-‐level volunteers. Must be a strategic and analytical thinker who is self-‐ motivated, personable, and skilled at communicating passion and storytelling through written and visual campaigns.
- Minimum Bachelor degree and 4-‐6 years of related/relevant work experience
- Proven success in major and individual fundraising, and developing strategies to grow annual giving
- Expertise in campaign fundraising desired and knowledge of planned giving programs a plus
- Ability to understand the interests and needs of patrons to develop and deepen their engagement with the May Festival and Vocal Arts Ensemble
- Experience working in a deadline-‐driven environment within faced-‐paced organization
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Extreme discretion and attention to detail
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and donor tracking software

The May Festival is the oldest continuous choral festival in the Western Hemisphere and one of the only true choral festivals that remains in our country today. Featuring the May Festival Chorus and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Festival presents concentrated choral repertoire rarely found during the concert season. Five unique concerts are performed over two weekends, resulting in a magnificent array of choral masterpieces and little known gems that provide an unusual choral experience for audience and performers alike. Established in 1873, the May Festival is directly responsible for the development of Cincinnati’s modern musical life. Music Hall, the city’s primary concert venue, was built specifically to house the Festival's performances in 1878, and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the fifth oldest orchestra in the United States, can trace its lineage back to this great tradition. The prestigious roster of May Festival Music Directors has included, among others, Theodore Thomas, Max Rudolf, James Levine and James Conlon. VAE: Cincinnati's Vocal Arts Ensemble, a chamber choir of professional singers, was founded in 1979 and is entering its 40th Season in 2019-20. Led by Elmer Thomas, Founding Director, from 1979–1988, Earl Rivers, Director Emeritus, from 1988–2008, Donald Nally from 2009-2013, and starting in January 2014, Craig Hella Johnson, VAE offers an annual subscription series of distinguished choral programs in notable architectural and acoustic venues throughout Greater Cincinnati. In addition, VAE produces outreach programs for children, youth and seniors, as well as recordings for local and national broadcasts. Achievements over 30 seasons include two ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) Awards for "Adventuresome Programming of Contemporary Music," broadcasts on 220 National Public Radio stations through "The First Art," performances before conventions of the American Choral Directors Association in San Antonio and Chicago, and appearances with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and May Festival.
The May Festival, Vocal Arts Ensemble and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra operate under an administrative shared services agreement. By this consolidation of resources and expertise, the cooperative management effort benefits all three organizations.

Position Summary: The Accounting Clerk (Part Time) provides a variety of administrative and clerical work for the Finance Department, assisting with overall accounting functions. Under general supervision, performs a variety of detailed accounting duties in accordance with standard accounting procedures and verifies data for completeness and accuracy. The Accounting Clerk (Part Time) daily responsibilities are often quantitative in nature and typically require use of computerized data management and analysis systems. This position provides assistance in maintaining a variety of financial transactions and records; compiling information and preparing reports and/or summaries.

POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Box Office Manager, the Patron Service Representative serves as one of the first points of engagement with our patrons. Successful candidates are professional and personable individuals who show great attention to detail in a fast-paced environment, an interest in classical music, and a commitment to outstanding service to our guests and colleagues.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Exemplify and promote the CSO guest service model
- Engage patrons in person, over the phone, and at concerts with superior service
- Learn, retain and manage a great deal of information about concerts, events and promotions in order to best answer patrons’ questions pleasantly, confidently, and efficiently
- Communicate and troubleshoot issues in a prompt manner while maintaining high standards of quality and accuracy
- Help increase patron engagement, ticket sales and donations by suggesting additional ticket purchases and/or adding on donations with purchase
- Work with Box Office Manager, Lead PSRs and other managers on continual skill development

Position Summary: The CSO’s Communications Department works closely with staff across all areas of the organization to ensure consistently excellent messaging. The part time Communications Assistant supports the Communications team in its mission by creating, managing, and distributing content across many platforms. Most important is the promotion of upcoming concerts and events through the local and national press and via social media. The Communications Assistant is also responsible for quickly responding to media requests for information and images, as well as vigilantly monitoring social media outlets for questions and/or questionable posts. This position reports to the Director of Communications and also assists the Digital Communications Manager and the Vice President of Communications.

- Text, images, and graphics for websites (CSO, Pops, and May Festival)
- Articles for Cincinnati Fanfare, the CSO’s program magazine
- Videos for social media and websites
- Respond to media requests and outside social media posts:
- Fulfill press requests and provide information about concerts & events
- Schedule local media appearances (on TV and radio) for guest artists
- Upload concert and event information to online calendar listings
- Monitor social media for questions and/or questionable posts
- Manage day-to-day public relations tracking and reporting software
- Support the daily functions of the Communications Department:
- Act as an advocate for the CSO, its musicians and guest artists
- Assist with streamlining inter-departmental processes
- Provide general clerical support
- Attend department meetings; report on current projects
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Reporting Relationship: The Communications Assistant reports to the Director of Communications.
Candidate Requirements:
- Knowledge and appreciation of music, especially classical music
- Ability to multi-task within a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication and organization skills
- Willingness to pitch-in and help other team members with various tasks
- Experience with Photoshop and preferably with Illustrator, too
- Experience with a CMS (WordPress or other)
- Experience with Microsoft Office software programs (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram)
- Knowledge of basic HTML
- Experience shooting and/or editing video is a plus
- Ability to work a regular schedule of 20 hours per week, preferably on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays

Internships at the CSO

Position Summary: This internship will give broad exposure to all areas of a thriving, world-class arts institution. The ideal intern is a student who will be pursuing a future career within a major performing arts organization. This internship is a volunteer position with the intern being able to commit between 8-20 hours per week.
This Internship will provide experience:- Assisting with executing engagement plans across all product lines (CSO, Pops, May Festival, Lollipops, etc.)
- Coordinating CSO presence at external and internal events; assist with events, answer questions, serve as a CSO/Pops ambassador
- Assisting with ordering goods and merchandise for events and promotions
- Assisting with concert enhancements, concert setup and volunteer coordination
- Assisting with digital/social media/mobile initiatives
What are the requirements?
- Upper level (college junior of senior) and/or graduate student pursuing degrees in Marketing, Arts Management, Public Relations, Journalism, Music or Communications preferred.
- Excellent project management, and verbal/written communication and computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite)
- Innate curiosity and willingness to learn
- Enjoys working collaboratively but also takes initiative to work independently
- Ability to professionally represent the CSO at concerts, and in the community
- Thrives in an extremely fast-paced environment and can process information on the fly
- Some knowledge of classical and/or choral music a plus
- Experience with research (surveymonkey.com, Google Analytics) and databases (Tessitura), and data analysis a big plus
